Catherine Stockett, Please Write a Sequel

I just stayed up late again last night to finish The Help. Like so many other bloggers and critics, I loved this novel. It's pitch-perfect and definitely gave me pause thinking about "the help" that I grew up with (although Richmond, VA in the 1980s was decidedly different than Jackson, MS in the early 1960s).

While I think the ending was just fine, I would definitely buy a sequel that takes us to NYC with Skeeter Phelan, and cuts back to Jackson to see Hilly get her just desserts (pun intended).

While "the help" in the 1980's in Richmond was probably different from "the help" in the 1960's in Jackson, they might disagree in some respects. How many times did you drive up Grove at 5 pm on a cold, raw, rainy, windy day and see arthritic 70 year old women hobbling to the bus stop so they wouldn't miss their bus & have to stand out in that cold rain until the next bus came in 20-30 minutes? I always found it incredibly offensive (& rude) their employers couldn't take them to the bus stop and let them sit in a warm, dry car until the bus came. It seemed like such a small, natural thing to do for someone who had been cleaning your house all day.

I was referring more to the fact that no housekeepers I knew had to wear a uniform or were routinely segregated within a home, but I don't mean to imply that it was a cakewalk.

We drove our housekeeper home when the weather was bad.

This was such a great book- we both loved it and I have recommended it to everyone I know in a book club.
